There are two things in this life that Gus Brannock truly loves; his family and his job. His family is growing and he wants what his brother and sister have before the job he’s worked so hard for takes its toll. The woman he’s got his eye on, however, isn’t interested in being with a man who risks his life every day. When the unexpected friendship with the sassy red head he used to hate turns into something Gus just doesn’t want to live without, he will do whatever it takes to have her. The hazards of his job as a detective for missing children may end up proving to be too much, but there’s a reason Aiden was brought into his life and nothing will stand in his way to keep her there.

Aiden Murphy used to hate the handsome jerk next door until a surprising discovery spun her world in another direction. Her life of devotion to her sister and niece has been her biggest strength with the exception of her art. That is, until Gus turns out to be the one thing that has been missing from that life all along. Aiden must decide if the unknown is worth the risk of loving the dedicated detective or if being pulled into his world is more than she can handle. When Gus becomes the only way for her to keep the people she loves most safe, will she understand why he treasures her untried strength or will she let her fear of the unknown decide for her?

Author Bio

I live in Morgan Utah with my husband, daughter, and dog, Kolo. I write as often as my active daughter will let me and my husband has the patience of a saint. I find inspiration from dreams, people I meet, and life experiences. When I write, I usually end up drinking one too many cans of Peace Tea, eating three too many Fruit by the Foot fruit snacks, and accidently kicking my pup and best buddy, Kolo, too many times since he loves to sleep under my desk at my feet.

I started writing as a teen, but my fear of the unknown won out every time and I threw everything out. After becoming a mother and deciding to stay at home to raise my beautiful little girl, I tried again when I couldn’t stop thinking of ideas. I loved every minute, every hour of sleep lost, and every character that came to life in my mind.

It’s strange, but my favorite moments are when I have writer’s block because I can turn to my husband and find inspiration through him by just doing what we do best together. Talking, laughing, and just being in love. He doesn’t like to read, but he never stops encouraging me to keep going.

Writing has become an important part of my life and every book has a special place in my heart.

Interview

What are you working on now?

I’m currently writing two projects at once. I’ve never done this before, and I can’t decide if I love it or hate it. I’m writing a Christmas Novella entitled Almost Perfect Christmas, the story of man who enlists the help of a woman in giving his daughter a perfect Christmas. Unbeknownst to him, his little girl has every intention of playing an angelic matchmaker. The other project is the first book of a 3-book series called Following His Heart, the story of a man who is eerily drawn to a woman, and after they fall in love, they discover what brought them together, and it just might tear them apart. Yes, the description is vague, but that’s just the way it has to be for now. I’m chuckling as I type this. Both books are contemporary romance novels and are due out this fall.

What are you reading now or what do you have in your TBR pile?

I just finished Learning to Swim by Sara Henry. I’m currently reading Love Me Tender by Mimi Barbour. On my TBR pile you’ll find A Reluctant Hero by Jackie Weger, Creatus by Carmen DeSousa, The Neighbor by Dean Koontz, Three Junes by Julia Glass, One Way or Another by Elaine Raco Chase…should I go on?

What flavor is your writing style?

I always tell people I write cotton candy for the mind. Think back to when you were a kid and you took a bite of that delectable confection. What did you do? You smiled. That’s what I’m going for in my romance novels.

Was writing always the first thing you wanted to do in life?

No, I wanted to be a teacher, but then I met and fell in love with my husband. We married and began raising a family. It wasn’t until my children started school that I started writing.

While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?

I believe there’s a lot of me in my protagonists. I write about women who are strong, yet vulnerable. My main characters and my secondary characters have flaws and make mistakes (don’t we all?), but then most of them do all they can to learn, grow and become better people.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

One piece of advice I often give to writers is to READ. Don’t just read in the genre in which you write. Read everything. And then figure out what you liked and what you didn’t…and then think about why. Reading and analyzing the writing of talented people can help you perfect your own skills.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I bow down to readers! I am so appreciative that they spend their hard-earned money on my books and then take the time to read my stories. I am so blessed to have a job I love, and I wouldn’t have this job if there weren’t readers who love romance novels.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I came to writing through my love of reading. I spent many a Saturday as a kid in the local library. I loved books, but I never imagined I would ever write one. My husband gets the credit for my becoming a writer. When my children started school and I decided to find a part-time job, he looked around at the piles of romance novels in our home and said, “You’ve read a lot of those. Why don’t you try writing one?” So, you see. It’s all his fault.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Not my latest book, but one of my titles—Where’s Stanley?—features an ending that I didn’t come up with. I handed in the completed manuscript, and my editor suggested a different ending. I wasn’t happy, but I did as she asked. Personally, I think the book suffered for it, but readers seem to enjoy it.

What books have most influenced your life most?

Old Yeller, Sounder, The Bell Jar, To Kill a Mockingbird…how can people read these books and not be influenced? There are so many titles that inspired me and moved me, molded and shaped me, there isn’t time to name them all. The characters in these wonderful books help young readers to decide what kind of individual they want to be.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

There was a time when I’d have said no. I have a plant-your-butt-in-the-chair-and-the-words-will-come attitude. But I did suffer writer’s block while my dad was battling cancer. It’s difficult to write feel-good happily-ever-after when your beloved father is dying.

Do you write an outline before every book you write?

I do, yes. I equate an outline with a road made; how do you know where you’re going if you don’t have a map? I might write the first chapter or two on the fly, but I always take the time to plan out where I want the story to go. Now that’s not to say that the characters are going to stay on the straight and narrow. They decide to veer off the highway every now and then, and that’s when I have to do a quick reroute.

Have you ever disliked something you wrote?

I’ve never published anything that I disliked. I have started projects that haven’t seen the light of day, either because I couldn’t figure out where to take the story, or I couldn’t make the protagonist sympathetic or likable. It’s a rare occurrence, and when it happens, I just set the story aside and hope I can someday come up with a solution.

Review

4.5 Pennies

Emily Marcus knows something is wrong with her marriage to Louis Bruel.  After 11 years, he no longer desires her.  So she takes the readers on a rewind of her life to see how they met and what their life used to be like.  Going back in time, we learn how player Louis Bruel fell for an innocent eighteen year old.

This really was a nice romance although at first it might seem a little smarmy due to the age difference.  Emily had to mature emotionally and sexually, and Louis had to mature into a boyfriend who treated a woman with love and respect and not as a sex object.   They have great chemistry, the dialogue is witty, and the sex is hot.

One of the fun features of the book is that it is very song oriented.  Emily and her friend Sara “believed that every human emotion has been expressed in a song written in the ’80’s.” To give the reader a more complete experience, Ms. Alexander has embedded web links throughout the novel for e-readers.  Press on the song title and you are taken to a site where you can read the lyrics and play the song. I loved it!  It added so much more to the mood of the book.  What a great experience!

Anyway, the rewind theme does show up many times in the book because Emily is young, Louis is impulsive, and they do make mistakes.  How many of us haven’t wished that we could rewind parts of our lives?  However, if you can’t rewind, you can learn from your mistakes or at least have an understanding partner. This book will take you through the highs and lows of the relationship. I sighed, I cried, I laughed, I gasped. How much more can you expect from a book?

Excerpt

I didn’t need to look back to know who was behind me. His scent alone added another milliliter of arousal to my underwear. I couldn’t turn around, he was leaning into me so close. I could feel his heat as his wide muscular chest pressed against me, enveloping me. Heart don’t fail me, now. Please don’t stop beating, I kept repeating to myself as my heartbeat started increasing to presto speed.
“Are you trying to make me come in my pants in front of all my clients, little girl?” he asked.
Fuck, I need to breathe. He continued whispering into my ear, making every hair on my body stand at attention. “I’ve been jerking off to the vision of your tits in that white top for the last two weeks.”
I think I officially stopped breathing when he said, “your tits.”
“Please tell me you’re at least eighteen. I really don’t want to go to jail. But I think it might be worth it even if you’re not.”
Okay, Emily, snap out of it. Say something adult and memorable. This was my chance.
“Yeah, I’m eighteen…” I finally said, a little breathlessly.
He got a little closer as his whole body shook laughing at my pathetic comment. I could faintly feel something hard bulging out and grazing my lower back. I was afraid of having a spontaneous orgasm if he got any closer.
“Thank … you … God. So you must be Jenna’s little sister?” he asked, sending chills through my overheated body. My underwear was soaked by now. Even I could smell how aroused I was.
“If Mike knew what I wanted to do to his hot little sister-in-law right now, he’d have my balls.”
I still hadn’t turned around. My legs were shaking; my brain was drawing a blank. I was much braver in my fantasies. Thank God there was no one in the kitchen to see us. WAIT! Reality hit me—where was everybody? Shouldn’t the other staff members be helping me with the clean up? Oh my God, can somebody see us? I thought. I remembered the one-way glass and started to turn my head around to check just in case anyone else was there. That’s when Louis Bruel’s lips brushed my cheek as I turned my head. I guess that was the official moment I stopped breathing. I gathered all my strength and turned to face him inside his loose grip. I looked up at him, trying to seem in control of the situation. After what felt like twenty minutes of me craning my head up to his towering height, he broke our silent stare-off.
“I can’t believe how beautiful your eyes are, little girl. They remind me of the water in Turks and Caicos. Your hair is the color of the sand there.”

Review

4 Pennies

You do not have to be a lover of paranormal romances to enjoy this book.  Yes, the werewolves and vampires are the major players in the book, but the overall message is one of acceptance – coming of age, accepting who you are, and coming in to your own.  Lily Blackwood is considered royalty in the wolf world, niece of the pureblood Killian Blackwood.  She rejects her wolf, living in the world of humans for years with Wallace as her protector.

But Lily can only ignore her wolf for so long.  As she matures and is ready to find a mate, Wallace makes it clear that she is predestined to be with another.  Even though he has loved her since she was a child, his ultimate role has been to be her protector.  Her true mate, Bryn, who marked her when she was a young teen, accepts his responsibility and returns.  MINE.  They both know it.  The bond is strong and Lily has to struggle with denying her feelings for Wallace and accepting her feelings for Bryn.

Thrown in with this is the danger from Uberman, a psycho wolf/vampire hybrid, and his father , Reinhard, a powerful vampire.  Both of them need pureblood werewolves to increase their power so they can destroy all werewolves.  Lily and her sister Cat are in constant danger.

The book is fast moving, between the havoc wreaked by Uberman, the animosity between Wallace and Bryn, and the warring passions that rage within Lily. It does not end in a Cliffhanger, but seems to promise a story for Wallace, which would make me very happy.

Excerpt

Lily nodded thanks at the woman who served her coffee. Turning too quickly, she collided with a very firm wall like being. She stumbled backwards and strong arms wrapped around her waist. Lily turned in time to see a quick, large hand catch the cup of coffee before it splattered all over the ground.

Inexplicably, she felt moisture pool between her legs. A whimper parted her lips. She turned breathlessly to look up at the most mesmerizing blue eyes she’d ever seen. Lily couldn’t breathe. Hell, she didn’t want to. She might vomit all over him in her embarrassment.

Her wolf exploded to the surface and she leaned up, tipped over by her rescuer and took in a deep whiff of his scent. It was so right. God, he smelled like the moist woods at night, soap, and salted masculine sweat. The tip of her nose rubbed against the curve of his neck and she opened her mouth. She realized in an instant what she was about to do to the handsome, gorgeous stranger—mark him as hers.

Mine.

Her wolf snarled and tried to become the dominant player in this new unexpected game. She felt something bay back at her. Startled, she realized that the man holding her was wolf. Her fingers gripped his biceps tighter and she opened her mouth to speak.

Slowly, and as if she would break from too rough a movement, the man set her to rights. “Sorry, I thought you wanted to dance there, this is Starbucks right? Not a dance studio?”

Lily found that her lips were flapping like a fish out of water. She sealed her lips shut and swallowed past the lump in her throat. Her heart thumped wildly against her rib cage and she could only stare up at this beautiful man—wolf. “Um, sorry. You must think I’m just—?” Reluctantly, she moved away from him.

His smile was warm and it reached his eyes. His dark hair was trimmed, but the ends at the back of his neck touched the collar of his shirt—rugged and wild.

Like me.

She watched him reach out and brush a strand of hair from her face. It was so tender her heart suddenly started to ache.

He is wolf, run for fucks sakes! Wallace is the only safe wolf.

But she couldn’t. She was rooted to the spot. Super glued to the floor. She wanted to know this man so bad.“Yeah, um, sorry again. I mean, I was thinking about things. Stuff—my friends.”

“Well, maybe you could help me; I’m actually supposed to meet someone, a young woman.”

She swallowed and tilted back a bit. For some reason the thought of him looking for another woman made her jealous—nope it downright pissed her and her wolf off. The barely restrained snarl pressed at her lips that were now tightly pressed together. Once she’d regained some form of humanity, she cleared her throat. “What makes you think I can find her? London is a huge place, and I only deal with a certain type of client in my line of work.”

“I was told to meet her here, her name’s Lily Blackwood.”

Synopsis 3

For the last fifteen years, Rose “Manny” Mankowski has been a very good girl. She turned her back on her youthful fancies and focused on her career. But now, at the age of 45, she’s questioning her choices and feeling more and more disconnected from her own life. When she’s passed over for promotion and her much younger new boss implies Manny’s life will never change, something snaps. In the blink of an eye, she’s quit her job, sold her house and cashed in her pension, and she’s leaving town on a six month road trip.

After placing a personal ad for a travelling companion, she’s joined in her mid-life crisis by Zeke Powell, the cynical, satirical, most-read – and most controversial – blogger for the e-magazine, What Women Want. Zeke’s true goal is to expose Manny’s journey as a pitiful and desperate attempt to reclaim her lost youth – and increase his readership at the same time. Leaving it all behind for six months is just an added bonus.

Now, armed with a bagful of destinations, a fistful of maps, and an out-spoken imaginary friend named Harvey, Manny’s on a quest to rediscover herself – and taking Zeke along for the ride.

Review
5 Pennies

This was far from an ordinary read for this penny.  Manny Mankowski has spent her life doing things for other people, helping her sister Daisy and her best friend Rebeccca, and helping out and taking charge at work only to be passed over for promotion.  Fed up, she quits her job, decides to sell her house, and plans to take off and live for herself.  This is a story of a woman in her forties who decides to take a risk for once in her life.  And after reading so many NA and YA books, it is refreshing to read a book about older women and their problems for a change.  Not that they are so much different, because everyone wants to be loved, and everyone wants to be appreciated.

So Manny places an ad because she doesn’t want to travel alone, and winds up with totally hot guy Zeke Powell, who is about 10 years younger, coming off a break-up of his own.  He actually goes on the trip at the behest of his boss, because he writes a blog What Women Want.  I know it might seem like from here on you can predict the end – they will fall in love, she will find out about the blog, they will break up, blah, blah, blah…The book is so much more than that.  Manny is determined to have a good time.  She drags Zeke kicking and screaming through all her adventures.  He tells himself he is being this great guy for humoring her and helping this frumpy little woman out, but she is really the one that helps him to see the world.  She is a vivacious, fun-loving person who charms people everywhere they go.  She starts to become as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside, and he becomes less of a cynic.

There are also captivating sub stories of Zeke’s friends and Manny’s friends, so this book really has everything.  I could not stop once I picked it up and I read it all in one day.  I will say one thing.  If you are looking for a book full of steamy sex scenes, you will not find it here.  But if you are looking for a book with great character development, witty dialogue, and people that you will root for and come to think of as your friends, then this is the book for you.

Author Bio

Victoria Bernadine (a pseudonym) is, as the saying goes, a “woman of a certain age”. After twenty-something years of writer’s block, she began writing again in 2008.

Victoria enjoys reading all genres and particularly loves writing romantic comedy and post-apocalyptic science fiction. What those two have in common is anybody’s guess.

She lives in Edmonton with her two cats (The Grunt and The Runt). A Life Less Ordinary is the first novel she felt was good enough to be released into the wild.

What I’m Reading~ Once Bitten, Twice Shy by C.C. Wood~by Penny Deb

Posted on

20739478

Book Synopsis

I used to think that my life was boring. I resigned myself to the rut I was stuck in. Then my entire existence was turned upside down.

In the last six months, I’ve learned things that would get me committed to an asylum if I repeated them. First, I was kidnapped by vampires. Yes, vampires. Sounds crazy, right? My best friend, Donna, became one of the fanged after that little adventure and hooked up with a hot, Scottish vampire named Conner. They’re even planning a wedding.

Secondly, I learned not all vampires are evil. In fact, some of them are downright sexy.

Alexander Dimitriades has it all. He’s tall, dark, and handsome and manages to give me tingles in all the right place and also make me laugh. Unfortunately, to be with him, I would have to give up my humanity and I like being human. Then, there’s the fact that the whole drinking blood thing gives me the heebie jeebies.

To make matters worse, there are plans in motion to change the place vampires hold in the human world. And I’m caught in the middle, between the vampire I’m falling in love with and a group that wants to create a vampire dictatorship, with humans as slaves.

Now, all I want is my calm, normal life back. As my friend, Ricki, likes to say, “Be careful what you wish for because it might come and bite you on the ass.” I hate it when she’s right.

Review

4 Pennies

4 out of 5 pennies

The title “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” really gives great insight into the main character of the story.  Ivie was attacked by a vampire in the previous book, “Bite Me”, and in this book is trying to recover.  She is attracted to Alexander Dimitriades, “Lex”, but fears him at the same time for he is another vampire. But Ivie can’t hide her thoughts from a vampire, and her desire to be dominated by Lex leads to a steamy, and at times stormy, relationship.

The vampire community is in turmoil, and the faction that wants to kill Conner and Lex tries to get to them through their loved ones.  Ivie proves to be tougher than she looks and possesses a special power to help fight to save her friends.  The book moves along at a quick pace with all of this drama, and the dialogue between the girls and their vampire boyfriends is very witty.  There is a great juxtaposition between the very formal male vampires and the fun-loving and irreverent girlfriends. This is a fun read.

A native Texan, C.C. grew up either reading or playing the piano. Years later, she’s still not grown up and doing the same things. Since the voices in her head never shut up, C.C. decided to try and profit from their crazy stories and started writing books.

Now that she has a baby girl at home, C.C.’s non-writing time is usually spent cleaning up poopy diapers or feeding the poop machine. Sometimes she teaches piano, cooks, or spends time bugging her hubby and two beagles.

Bite Me by C.C. Wood

Book Synopsis

I had the perfect life; an awesome job in advertising, a gorgeous high rise apartment, and a flirtation with the guy down the hall. Then it all came crashing down. Two months later I was a cocktail waitress living in a tiny one bedroom apartment. I had also developed a serious ‘men suck’ attitude.

That all changed the night I met the beautiful and enigmatic Conner Savage. But there was just one little problem…he said he was a vampire. Figures a man that hot would be batshit crazy. Or so I thought. It didn’t take me long to realize that Conner wasn’t a nut job and that I was addicted to him.

With every moment we spent together he drew me deeper into his world and the supernatural culture in which he lived.
Now I had a choice: the vampire I craved or a normal life. Couldn’t be easier, right?

You would expect a paranormal romance named “Bite Me” to be a light-hearted read, but while the dialogue is smart and funny, this book also touches on some heavier issues.  When Donna is attacked after leaving her job as a cocktail waitress, she is saved by Conner Savage.  He has the three H’s going for him – Hot, Handsome, and Highlander, but as Donna soon finds out, he is also a vampire.  Author C. C. Wood dispels all former beliefs readers might have about vampires – Conner can eat, sleep at night, go out in daylight, and even has a heartbeat.  But he does live forever, and that is a reality that Donna has to  face.  This adds so much to the book.  Donna and Conner do have an instant connection, but Donna does hold back as she considers the implications of life with a vampire.  How will it affect her relationships with family and friends?  How will he feel as he remains youthful and she ages? This adds a lot of depth to what could have been just a light read.

The story does have the jealous female vampire angle here as well to create more drama for the couple as they try to work out their relationship.  I am a little late to the party here on C.C. Wood’s paranormal reads, but so glad I made it! I am looking forward to the upcoming release of the next book in the series, Once Bitten, Twice Shy, the story of Donna’s best friend, Ivey.

1 Book SynopsisChar and Riley have encountered pain and heartache in the past. They were sure that they would never meet someone that would heal their hearts and allow them to love again. Then, on an ordinary Sunday, a newspaper in a minimart changes their lives forever.

Although they share a strong physical connection, they ultimately hunger for one another’s emotional touch.

No matter how hard they’ve tried to stay away from each other, the magnetic force between them has always remained strong.

Char and Riley have been through it all; love and loss, trust and deceit. They are the glue that holds their Boston family together and the ones that would be lost without the love and support of their family and friends.

Today is the day we’ve all waited for—the magical moment when two lives become one.

This is the book we “touched” fans have been waiting for. After meeting Riley and Char in the first book, and following their threads in the other two, we finally, literally, receive an invitation to their wedding and go through the day with them every step of the way.  And as Riley goes through his wedding day jitters,  he relives the key moments that we all loved – the first day they met and he accused Char of using her tiny little meat claws to steal the last paper, the day he changed from hating Char to liking her, and then the day he knew he loved her.

But as in all touched books, our favorite characters from the previous stories show up – they have to, they are in the wedding party!  But we find out the latest news on Derrick and Chloe, Char’s sister, and find out if Pete and Emma, Riley’s sister, have stayed together as a couple.  And even though you might think this is all a rehash, there are still a few surprises. This novella is worth the read just to have a chance to be with Riley and Char on their big day and just enjoy the love that they share. This is a feel good book. And the playlist at the end! A nice script for anyone looking for wedding songs.

Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan

Publication Date January 25, 2014

Book Synopsis

When Bree Prescott arrives in the sleepy, lakeside town of Pelion, Maine, she hopes against hope that this is the place where she will finally find the peace she so desperately seeks. On her first day there, her life collides with Archer Hale, an isolated man who holds a secret agony of his own. A man no one else sees.

Archer’s Voice is the story of a woman chained to the memory of one horrifying night and the man whose love is the key to her freedom. It is the story of a silent man who lives with an excruciating wound and the woman who helps him find his voice. It is the story of suffering, fate, and the transformative power of love.

I have read a lot of YA novels, and I was pretty sure I liked the bad boys. I liked the swagger, the potty mouths, the experience, and yes, the motorcycles that seem to go along with the image. That is, until I met Archer. Archer does not know he is gorgeous. Archer has never been with a woman. And Archer doesn’t even have a driver’s license, much less a bike. But what Archer does have is a gentle heart, a sense of humor, and the capacity for love. Bye Bye bad boys!

Archer Hale lives as a recluse in the small town of Pelion. He suffered a tragic accident as a child, losing both his parents and his voice, and is raised by an uncle who himself was somewhat unbalanced. Bree Prescott was also damaged, fleeing her own tragic past and trying to find peace in the same quiet town. Her path eventually crosses with Archer’s, and she realizes that part of his solitude is caused by an inability to communicate. She can sign because her own father was deaf, and eventually breaks through Archer’s wall of silence.  Every little step that Archer takes is a victory, and Bree glories in each of his successes.

Mia Sheridan has written a beautiful story. Bree and Archer’s story is about the healing power of love – because each of them needs to heal and learn to stand alone as they learn to stand together. There is such joy in seeing Archer blossom. Usually books are the other way around and we see a woman blossom. Archer learns the secrets of love and life. I ached when he ached, cried when he cried, and laughed when he laughed. This Penny has flipped for the good boy!
