Detective Jackson “Jax” McKenna walks into a psychologist’s office and finds that the doctor bears a striking resemblance to his first love, Lainie, who disappeared ten years ago after their disastrous first date ended in violence.

Dr. Elizabeth Parker is really Elaine Wilson, Jax’s Lainie. She’s been in hiding since the night that changed both their lives. Jax discovers the truth when the killer lets Lainie know he’s found her. When Jax and Lainie go into hiding to keep Lainie safe, old feelings resurface as the killer threatens their lives. Can Jax save Lainie and help her stay Invisible?

The title of the book really tells the whole story. As a high school senior, Lainie wears baggie clothes, big glasses, and no make-up to stay off the radar and be left alone – invisible to her classmates and to avoid the attentions of her druggie step-father. Jax, “Jackson the jock”, is full of swagger, using his popularity so his sweet side stays invisible to others. That is, until Lainie is assigned to tutor him and they find the real selves that each has hidden away.

But fate steps in and Lainie is forced to become invisible by changing her identity and beginning a new life to elude her step-father. The story switches between the present, when Lainie and Jax find each other again, and ten years prior, when they first fell in love. It is also told in alternating POV’s. Together again, they go on the run to hide from the step-father who has finally caught up to her after ten years. This is more than just a love on the run story, for Lainie is determined not to be invisible any longer and wants to be seen as a strong woman unafraid to show the world who she is, before she can move on with her life.

This is a fast-paced, intriguing story. My favorite quote, referring to Jax, “He tasted like wine and dreams.” And yes, ladies, even with that, Lainie is able to resist. The question is, for how long?

When this story began, it had the earmarks of so many other books we’ve read – Cassie is leaving New York after breaking up with her abusive fiancé and going back to her roots in a small town. But this book was surprisingly different.  So different, in fact, that I had to stop reading at night because I was too scared and had to wait for the sweet light of day to finish.

Yes, this is a book with a paranormal twist. Cassie’s parents were murdered when she was only six, and she was raised by her grandmother.Cassie moves back into her grandmother’s house not long after her grandmother’s mysterious death.Strange things happen. Doors fly open.  Picture frames are moved. Keys keep disappearing. Harmless enough until the message in the mirror, “Cassie must die.”

Luckily, Cassie finds protection in the form of childhood friend and now town sheriff James. He assigns his deputy, Logan, to watch over Cassie, and the fun begins because they hate/love each other on sight. Logan has known since he was a boy that he was fated to meet and protect Cassie. I don’t want to give away too many details, so let’s just say demons and possession are involved.

Cassie is tough and funny, and she does not give in easily to Logan’s alpha ways. This well-written book was fun and scary, and a four and a half penny read for me.

I am a forty-something wife and mother of three fur kids.  I’ve been an avid reader as long as I can remember.  I used to disappear with a book when it was time to do dishes or clear the table.

I read all genres, but my favorites are romance and horror.  I started out reading Nancy Drew and quickly graduated to adult romances.  My favorite romance is “Moonraker’s Bride” by Madeline Brent.  For some reason that story has stuck with me.  My absolute favorite author is Stephen King – I just love how he can weave a story and characters together.

I only started writing recently after thinking about it for years.

Saving Cassie is my first novel.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The thought of a life without Savannah was incomprehensible to Tate Connors. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would find his girl in the form of a sassy, stubborn, beautiful Australian. Finally he had the girl and life he so desperately wanted, but he still couldn’t ignore the fear that it would crash around him.

When Tate’s past becomes his present and Savannah’s present becomes her past, the possibility of a future together collides head-on with reality.

In her darkest days, the words Just Breathe provided a peaceful comfort to Savannah from the heavens above. Now as she and Tate go down the path of new beginnings, brutal endings, and the constant craving of a happily ever after, they are anxious to learn how to Breathe Again.

Rachel Brookes is from a coastal town on the east coast of Australia where beaches, kangaroos and surfers roam free. 3.5 Pennies out of 5

The basis of this story is solid.  Boy meets girl, they get to know one another and their feelings grow. They come from different social levels of affluence and their parents roles in their lives are like night and day.

Sage is the child of free spirited parents and is encouraged to follow her dreams on her terms.  She expresses herself through her photography.  Her love of nature and the community she lives in is reflected in the photos she takes.   A college freshman, she is exploring her opportunities as an artist and supporting herself through freelance work.

Kirby is a child of privilege.  Also a college freshman, he is studying business, a career path chosen for him.  His father, a real estate magnate,  wants his son to follow in his footsteps and is grooming him to one day run his empire.

When Kirby brings Sage home to meet his parents, his father makes it all too clear that he disapproves of her.  The plot takes a number of twists and turns which reveals where the families lives have intersected in the past.

As a character, I had a hard time warming up to Sage. Knowing the hardship Kirby’s father has caused members of her community, she seems to be of the mindset that you can’t blame the son for the sins of the father.  She tends to sweep those concerns away cavalierly much to the dismay of those around her.  It’s not until the end that I finally feel that she stands for something.  Kirby on the other hand, was weak.  Doing his father’s bidding at every turn showed his lack of maturity and growth as a person.

With that being said, this is a (NA) New Adult book.  The characters are not supposed to be emotionally fully grown.  They are supposed to be finding themselves and developing into who they are and who they will become.  In this story, however, Sage and Kirby experience successes that would have been more realistic had their characters been older.  This and stiff dialog are what prevented me from rating this story higher even though on its face I enjoyed it.

Manual Exposure is Jeannie M. Bushnell’s first novel and I am interested in seeing what her next book brings.  I am confident that her talents will continue to grow and shine in her future works.

Jeannie wrote her first book in elementary school. She painstakingly wrote, illustrated, bound it together in cardboard, and created the fabric cover out of an old pillowcase. A voracious reader, her heroes were the authors who possessed the power to create the characters and stories that kept her awake into the wee hours of the night as she devoured their words.

As a student of journalism, broadcast communications, and rhetoric, Jeannie further developed her love for the art of telling a good story. Her love of animals, research, and investigative reporting threw her into the world of animal rescue. Delving deeper into this world, Jeannie turned all creative and professional endeavors to spreading compassion for all living things.

In addition to her work as a freelance writer, Jeannie is an entrepreneur who creates her own line of eco-friendly pet products, and as a vegan baker and cake decorator, Jeannie shares her food, recipes, and tips with vegans and non-vegans alike.

Caring for her beloved companion animals in their last stages of life exposed the finite nature of life to her, pushing Jeannie to put pen to paper and write her first novel. Well, second, lest we forget her childhood bear tale.

Described as someone who has never met a stranger, Jeannie enjoys befriending her readers and supporting her fellow writers. Always willing to chat for a spell, Jeannie hopes to hear from you!

4 out of 5 Pennies

Who doesn’t like to read a love story where the most unlikely pair come together to discover what it takes to find true love.  Are Autumn and Hunter that pair that find true love or do they fall short?

This book isn’t just another love story.

Autumn is the epitome of high school geek.  She wants to try to leave that all behind and start anew at college.

Hunter is the cocky, handsome bad guy that has his own history.  But is that all he is?  Is there more to Hunter than meets the eye? Will Autumn take a chance in learning more about the mysterious bad boy or will she walk away?

The book begins on the day that Autumn arrives at college.  From her first step off the bus you see that Autumn does not have the best of luck.  She has an unfortunate run in with a leaf blower that causes quite a scene.  This is also the same time Autumn gains her first site of Hunter Bane.   After the leaf blower was turned off, Autumn was trying to straighten her clothes and hair when she saw him.  ” My eyes narrow as they catch the gaze of one person in particular.  A long lean guy wearing a black leather jacket, who’s standing a few feet away from me with a couple of other guys.  His flaring gray eyes narrow as I catch myself staring right back at him.  I blush when his plump lips slowly curl up into a cheeky smile.”

During the book you are able to see Autumn grow  and adapt to her changing world.  Autumn is faced with many decisions where she must choose whether to do what is morally correct or to turn a blind eye and hope it works out.

This is not your run of the mill love story.  FIERCE will keep you guessing.  There are many trials and tribulations throughout the book.  Autumn’s strength and will to survive are put to the test on many occasions.  Even though it is evident that Autumn and Hunter are complete opposites they can’t seem to stay away from each other.  Their paths continue to cross in and out of the classroom.

This book kept my attention from the beginning.  Just when I would think I had the direction of the story figured out the author would throw in a twist that would keep me guessing.  Will Autumn and Hunter defy the odds and find love?  Will Evie and Autumn continue to be friends through the changes college life brings?

FIERCE is not your typical love story.  It keep me wanting to know what will happen next?  Will there be a happy ending for Autumn and Hunter?  If you fight hard enough can true love conquer all?  Clarissa Wild wrote a great book, that I highly recommend.  I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

–Book Review– Love Hacked by Penny Reid (Penny Maggie)

5 Pennies out of 5

Publication Date: March 11, 2014

There are three things you need to know about Sandra Fielding: 1) She makes all her first dates cry, 2) She hasn’t been kissed in over two years, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Sandra has difficulty removing her psychotherapist hat. Of her last 30 dates, 29 have ended the same way: the man sobbing uncontrollably. After one such disaster, Sandra–near desperation and maybe a little tipsy–gives in to a seemingly harmless encounter with her hot waiter, Alex. Argumentative, secretive, and hostile Alex may be the opposite of everything Sandra knows is right for her. But now, the girl who has spent all her life helping others change for the better, must find a way to cope with falling for someone who refuses to change at all.

In recent discussions of books the question is often asked: “What is your favorite line?” There are books that while I am reading them I have some lines that I really love for any number of reasons but I don’t often remember them when I’m done unless I either write them down, or someone else had that same favorite line and they remember what it is. I can take notes or I can put little sticky markers near my favorite lines. I do not write in books. Growing up in my house you did not deface the printed page with your own original markings. Dog earing pages was grounds for grounding. And then I got a Kindle. The feature that I think I love the most on my Kindle is the highlight option.  Don’t worry, there’s a point to all of this.

When I got an ARC for Love Hacked, not only did I squeal and tell my kids to order their own damn pizza because I was busy, I realized that I could use the highlighting option on my Kindle to make sure I remembered my favorite lines. I knew that there would be many. I had read Penny Reid’s two other books and loved them for all the clever moments, hysterical Penny-isms (the woman can make up some amazing new words) and gut bustingly funny verbal exchanges. When I finished the Love Hacked and took a look at my highlights there were a metric ton of them. And these were the short bits that could easily be marked off. I drew the line at highlighting whole scenes.

Love Hacked is the third book in the Knitting in the City series by Penney Reid and, I think, the best. Sandra Fielding is a child psychiatrist who is looking for The One. She vets her dates to assure that they fulfill her criteria for a suitable life partner. Her dates tend to be clean-cut, professional, golfer types – and she makes them cry. Sandra has a gift for drawing people out so that she can help them. With her dates, this usually means tears before dessert and a referral for therapy. So, lots of first dates for Sandra, but it’s not all bad. These dinners take place at The Taj where her waiter is always the lovely Alex of the dead sexy voice. He’s exactly the kind of guy that Sandra doesn’t date but puts the unusual thought of a one night stand possibility in her head. It turns out that Alex has had his eye on Sandra and when they finally start talking the sparks sure do fly. Love Hacked is full of hot romance – actual romance with people figuring each other out and having lots of fun while they do – mystery, intrigue, surprises, lots of laughs, and the Tuesday night knitting group. There’s also Bonergate, Star Wars jokes and Sandra’s collection of custom situational t-shirts.

As usual I fell in love with Penny’s characters. Sandra is smart, sexy, funny – Star Wars jokes and custom situational t-shirts, worth repeating – caring and a little more vulnerable than she’ll admit. Alex is, um, what was I saying? Right, Alex. Alex is a sexy enigma who will in turns make your heart feel like it will break and make your body feel like it’s going to overheat while all the while you brain will try to keep up with his. I loved watching Sandra and Alex figure each other, and themselves, out during this story. They are good for each other, challenge each other, cause the other to change in the best ways, and never too much.

Penny Reid has once again given us wonderful, well-rounded, characters in a smart, funny, unique story. The first person narrative is handled perfectly. It is Sandra, it sounds like her, not like Elizabeth from Friends without Benefits or Janie from Neanderthal Seeks Human. This is her story in her voice. And this is as much of a spoiler as you’ll get. As much as you love Alex by the end Sandra’s story, you’ll love him more after the epilogue.

Penny Reid has difficulty writing about herself in the third person. She finds it strange and unsettling. Therefore, Penny will now switch to the first person.

I’m originally from California but now live in the Southeast US with my family after going to college in the area. I work full time at a large University in the field of biomedical research (e.g. clinical research studies conducted under the auspices of the FDA). I work a lot. I also love to knit and crochet; sew bags, blankets, and clothes; carve lino blocks for fabric printing; make homemade soap, jam, marmalade; and- most recently- I’m learning to garden.

I don’t like to sit still unless I’m writing, reading, or knitting and I usually only knit in my knitting group… or at red lights while stuck in traffic. I only read on planes (where I’m trapped). Luckily, I travel a lot for work.

The voices in my head (characters) became so loud over the summer of 2012- specifically, Janie Morris- that I was forced to write Neanderthal Seeks Human, my first attempt at a full length novel. It took me 7 months while working full time, crafting, and raising my people-children (boy-5, girl-3).

If I could have any job in the world it would be my job because I feel like what I do makes a tangible difference in the lives of every living person. If I could have any life in the world it would be my life. Happiness is the seed of good fortune and success. Do what it takes to be happy and be a source of happiness for others.

Malcolm (Book 1, The Redemption Series)

Malcolm by S. J.West

Publication Date:  January 19, 2014

1 Book Synopsis

Disclaimer: This series is a continuation of my Watcher series of books. You need to have read the following series (in this order) to understand what is happening in this story: The Watchers Trilogy, The Watcher Chronicles, and Caylin’s Story.  Please be advised that this series will contain sexual situations of a mature nature. If I were to rate this series like a movie, I would rate it ‘R’.
On the night Anna was born, she was promptly sent away from the down-world to live in the cloud city of Cirrus. That very same night her future was decided for her when she became betrothed to Crown Prince Augustus Amador. For twenty-one years, she has lived as Lady Anna, future Empress of Cirrus and proud daughter of Andre Greco. Although Anna’s destiny seemed laid out for her, fate intervenes to reveal the true path she was always meant to take. With the unexpected arrival of Malcolm Devereaux into her world, Anna knows without a shadow of a doubt that she has finally been reunited with the missing piece of her soul. Chaos and turmoil soon turn Anna’s once docile life upside down, but she knows with Malcolm by her side she can accomplish the mission she was born to undertake. Not only must Anna fight against the princes of Hell, but she must also find a way to help Malcolm stop living in the past so they can have a chance at a future.

This book is a continuation from the previous works The Watcher series………I highly recommend reading the previous books before reading this one.
Malcolm and Anna shine in this book, the journey Malcolm has to take to get where he will finally find his soul mate and find the happiness he deserves, takes you a thousand years into the future, while you do get a glimpse of how Malcolm was asked to wait until he gets to the point of fulfilling his promise to help protect Lilly’s family line it just shows how much Malcolm loves and wants to everything he can to feel as though he has finally done what he has to do to receive his father’s forgiveness. Anna’s journey is filled with secrets, she has no clue as to what is expected of her or why, for her to be able to start to understand she is thrust into a fight to save not only her world, but countless others as well.
While trying to figure out how she will fight this war, along with trying to win Malcolm’s heart,  she is forced into a marriage, traveled to a world she has always wanted to help but had no idea as to how to go about doing so, loses her father, and starts to unravel secrets as to who she really is and where her family comes from.
The book kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end, although it ends as a cliffie, it was still a very enjoyable read for me…I can’t wait to continue this story with “Anna”.

Once upon a time, a little girl was born on a cold winter morning in the heart of Seoul, Korea. She was brought to America by her parents and raised in the Deep South where the words ma’am and y’all became an integrated part of her lexicon. She wrote her first novel at the age of eight and continued writing on and off during her teenage years. In college she studied biology and chemistry and finally combined the two by earning a master’s degree in biochemistry. After that she moved to Yankee land where she lived for four years working in a laboratory at Cornell University. Homesickness and snow aversion forced her back South where she lives in the land which spawned Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, John Grisham and B.B. King.  After finding her Prince Charming, she gave birth to a wondrous baby girl and they all lived happily ever after.
