I am a Master. You must know this fact to understand my story. I capture women. I break them down. And I rebuild them. If they are lucky, they are sold into the professional hands of another Master. If they are less fortunate, they are buried beneath the ground, never to be thought of again. I lust for the control, I demand absolute submission and my body yearns to warp the minds of those I train. Power is the only thing I’ll ever need and I am addicted to the feeling of ultimate control. I am wealthy, good-looking, educated and charming. And I am – in no way – a good man. I do not want love. I do not want kindness. She thought she could change me by giving me the two things I knew I never wanted. She was wrong Warning: This book contains mature situations and scenes involving sexual and physical violence.
As I alternate my reading selections between genres or subgenres, Courtesan by Lily White was my choice under the umbrella of taboo. I remember buying this book before Amazon took it down as the buzz was it was going to be banned. It was re-released later as Her Master’s Courtesan, new cover with the same content.
This book deals with the topic of sex slavery and human trafficking, a subject that is getting a lot of attention lately due to world events.
The psychological descriptions the author used in explaining the systematic breaking of the human spirit was very detailed. The use of fear, pain and domination to gain over the subject was graphic. It made me wonder if as a society we’ve become numb to the horrific situation of human trafficking and sexual servitude because it has become almost popularized in varying forms of media. Prostitution is glamourized in films like Pretty Woman. Certain countries have become meccas for deviants to satisfy their sexual proclivities and fetishes including with children. Pornography is so common place that societal norms have changed as to what we view as acceptable and what is not. A large group of young girls are kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery in the name of religion. What a change from 20 years ago.
Courtesan, also titled Her Master’s Courtesan blurs the lines between BDSM (where there is consensual involvement in the activities) and manufactured rape. The male lead character, Aiden, has a methodical approach to seeking subjects for captivity based upon requests made my members of a secret society. The premise of the story and the details as to who his objectives are carried out are disturbing. And while I have read other books about similar situations, I did not grow an attachment to them or their plight. Not sure if that says more about me as a person or the author and her writing. While certain sections of the book shocked me, I do not recall ever crying for the characters as a result of their plight. Perhaps Ms. White’s ability to keep Aiden a cold and distant Master was captured so well that I was as unaffected by his actions as he was.
I will say that the first 60% of this book was better than the last 40%. It seemed that the latter parts of the story were wrapped up rather conveniently and the twists were not as shocking. It was no surprise to me when a certain individual was kidnapped. What was strange to me is that there were three individuals who ran in the same circles that went missing and as a reader I was expected not to think this would raise red flags especially considering the connection to other characters in the book.
There were moments when I was pulling for the female lead to find the happiness she wanted, but her view of happiness was warped and I had a hard time relating to her and her desire for it.
As far as writing is concerned, I think the author did a very good job for most of the book. I read this fairly quickly considering my schedule and never had a moment where I wanted to put it down or just walk away. The story flowed at a good pace, I saw very few editorial errors (which are a huge pet peeve of mine) and the level of detail in the story kept me wanting to know what happened next.
While this title is not available on Amazon, it can be accessed on Smashwords. There is also a book 2 Her Master’s Teacher available that I will consider reading at a later time and in rotation.
Lily White is a dark writer who likes to dabble on the taboo side of eroticism. Most of the time she can be found wandering around aimlessly while her mind is stuck in some twisted power play between two characters in her head. You may recognize her in public by the confused expression, random mumbling, and occasional giggle while thinking up a scene. Lily’s favorite things in life are reading, thinking about reading, buying books for reading….and writing. Her other secret pleasure is meeting with her plot editor in public to discuss her books and watching the shocked expressions of the people around her that don’t realize she’s talking about a book. When Lily is not reading, writing, wandering or freaking out innocent bystanders, she’s sleeping.
