Review5 Pennies
Penny Reid’s writing has captivated me since her first book, Neanderthal Seeks Human.  All subsequent releases are now top priority reads for me and I almost get anxious waiting for each one publish.  Scenes from the City was no exception.  As this is a very limited time release, do not delay in ordering it.  Even if you have not read her other books yet, order it so you have it.

SftC is a novella collection of short stories about the characters from her Knitting In The City series.  Each story gives you a glimpse of an event that happens post-book and in one case pre-book.

‘Neanderthal Seeks Honeymoon’ – Janie and Quinn
‘Friends Definitely With Benefits’ – Elizabeth and Nico
‘Hacking the Hacker’ – Sandra and Alex
‘Beauty and the Beard’ – Ashley and Drew
‘Ninja at First Sight’ – Fiona and Greg

Reading these stories was like visiting old friends, catching up on the happenings of their lives and enjoying their company.  Penny has such a gift for creating characters that are complex and multidimensional while being the kind of people you’d actually like to know.

Spending time with Janie and Quinn on their honeymoon, Elizabeth and Nico’s first days of marriage, a birthday trip to the museum with Sandra and Alex, the long waited reunion between Ashley and Drew and la piece de resistance in the backstory on how Fiona and Greg meet.

As a future book will feature Fiona and Greg, it was a treat to read about how they met in college.  Watching their beginnings unfold create a strong foundation on what we can expect to be another exceptional story from Penny.

While we have gathered bits and pieces about Fiona and Greg from Penny’s other books, watching how the seed of this relationship is planted, germinates and eventually blooms is lovely and once again I find myself anxiously waiting for this book.

While I love all the men in Penny’s books, I’ve made it no secret that Nico is my favorite, but that spot became jeopardized when Greg confesses to Fiona, “I want to be your first kiss… I want to be your first everything.”

This collection of stories is meant to be read after you have read the rest of her books, but I implore you to grab this now and put it in your queue to devour after you read the rest of the series.  As it is a limited release, you don’t want to miss it, and with proceeds going to Toys for Tots, you can feel good about treating yourself to this as well.

Author Bio

Penny Reid has difficulty writing about herself in the third person. She finds it strange and unsettling. Therefore, Penny will now switch to the first person.

I’m originally from California but now live in the Southeast US with my family after going to college in the area. I work full time at a large University in the field of biomedical research (e.g. clinical research studies conducted under the auspices of the FDA). I work a lot. I also love to knit and crochet; sew bags, blankets, and clothes; carve lino blocks for fabric printing; make homemade soap, jam, marmalade; and- most recently- I’m learning to garden.

I don’t like to sit still unless I’m writing, reading, or knitting and I usually only knit in my knitting group… or at red lights while stuck in traffic. I only read on planes (where I’m trapped). Luckily, I travel a lot for work.

The voices in my head (characters) became so loud over the summer of 2012- specifically, Janie Morris- that I was forced to write Neanderthal Seeks Human, my first attempt at a full length novel. It took me 7 months while working full time, crafting, and raising my people-children (a boy and a girl).

If I could have any job in the world it would be my job because I feel like what I do makes a tangible difference in the lives of every living person. If I could have any life in the world it would be my life. Happiness is the seed of good fortune and success. Do what it takes to be happy and be a source of happiness for others.
