Have you ever wondered what would happen if you went looking for vampires? What if you secretly believed they existed? Dylan decides to go on a vacation of a lifetime in order to find herself. She begins in Romania, contemplating the existence of vampires and quickly realizes that she was wrong. Once she ends up in Florence, however, she is confronted with an immortal, Nico. She must be marked if she wants to live because she learned the truth of vampires. Nico catches her and her heart by surprise. The Mortal One is a whirlwind romance amidst vampire politics. Dylan must be marked for her safety, yet she is trying to be claimed by another vampire, thus making her time in Florence very complicated for her. She tests the bounds of her relationship with a vampire and tries to create a life for herself as the mortal one. The main setting of the book is Florence, Italy, where Dylan is in love with the history of the city.

Review

4.5 Pennies

When Dylan decided she needed time away from Florida and her life, she took the opportunity to travel to Transylvania for the Vampire Symposium.  She had been fascinated with vampires for a long time and had always wanted to further explore the possibilities of them existing.  She was gravely disappointed in the Symposium and Alin who she met up with at the event; he claimed to be a vampire.  After this disaster meeting Dylan decides to cut her trip in Transylvania short and continue on to her vacation hoping to have a better outcome.

During her time in Paris she had an eerie feeling that she was being followed, so inevitably she decided to head to Italy a little sooner to finish up her trip.  Throughout her vacation Dylan continued to have a nagging voice in the back of her head reminding her that she still believes that vampires exist, she tries to stop the thoughts but they just don’t go away.  Dylan knew from the beginning that Alin was not the real thing because he only met one of the three truths about vampires. Dylan’s reading over the years had taught her 3 truths:

“One, vampires only came out at night. Two, they had fangs. Three, they were cold to the touch.”

Even after knowing what she saw at the Symposium was faked, she was not giving up hope.

Dylan’s life and future take a drastic turn when she meets Niccolo (Nico).  Nico is who Dylan has been searching for her entire life but didn’t know until that moment when he grabbed her in the alley.

From the first encounter between Nico and Dylan you can sense the chemistry between them.  It is quite humorous at times when Dylan forgets that Nico has the ability to read her mind, she gets herself into a few situations because she can’t make her thoughts quiet down.

This book has mystery, intrigue, HOT vampires, myths that are found to be truths, love and death, and friendship, one life forgotten and left behind, to begin a new life in a new city as a new person, and did I mention HOT vampires.  Dylan has her whole future in front of her or does she?  What is to come of the relationship and declarations set forth from Nico to Dylan?  Will Nico and Dylan find their happy ever after or is their eternity doomed?

I really enjoyed this book. This book was so much different than any of the other vampire stories that I have read.  This one has an ever changing storyline; from humorous antics that Dylan gets herself in, to drama between the vampires, to love and attraction between Dylan and Nico,  and many references to history of vampires as told through Nico and Costin; it holds the readers interest so that they want to know what will happen next.  I can’t wait to see what is in store for Nico and Dylan in the next book from Shannon Bell…
